Tales from Nowhere

My Elusive Sleep

Sleep: A natural suspension of consciousness at night
Or at least that’s what the dictionary tells me.
But what does ‘a natural suspension of consciousness’ mean?

For me it summons the image of some spirit like mist
floating above the bed
as I lay beneath oblivious to the outside world,
free from the trials and tribulations
my waking life brings.

I see myself laying there,
mouth wide open,
probably snoring but
dreaming fantastical dreams
where everything ends with rainbows
and ‘happily ever afters’’.

In the meantime my ‘suspended consciousness’  floats around,
aimlessly, impatiently
waiting for dawn to break,
or the alarm to chime
before rudely re-entering my waking mind,
shattering my illusions in the process
and forcing me to accept
that it was no more than an llusion.

  1. “my waking mind, shattering my illusions in the process and forcing me to accept that it was no more than a dream.” Sometimes a real heaven-sent.

  2. I can’t argue with you Douglas my man…though most of the time it’s getting to sleep that’s the problem ;o)
